Most likely, the construction of the tower was completed in the 1370s-1380s.ĭuring its history, the tower was restored, and the sandstone statues that were located on the tower were removed in 1972 and replaced with concrete replicas. The tower was erected as a fortification, but also as a kind of representative triumphal arch, which could previously be closed and through which, and then over the Charles Bridge, the Czech kings passed the coronation way ( The Royal Way), established by Charles IV. The tower, together with the Charles Bridge, was built in the middle of the 14th century according to the project of Peter Parlerge by Emperor Charles IV.
